There is an almost identical pair in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. The rope twist and patterns along the edges are noted by the Met catalogue to represent the stitched textile and leather elements of similar Peruvian lined stirrups. Metal sheath stirrups would protect the wearer in brush and combat alike.
