Cubist style ceramic statuette of a woman holding an infant by JARU.
The nude figure, modeled contra posta, cradles the baby lovingly in her arms and gazes upon it with affection and awe.
She stands on a square plinth. There is the suggestion of some rocks or a stump at her feet as in Classical sculpture.
Molded porcelain with cornflower blue slip.
In the 1970s Jaru did a successful collection of human figures with sharpened angles and some flattened surfaces that recall the African mask inspired Cubist experiments of earlier in the century.
MADE by Jaru, Culver City, CA: 1970s.
MARKINGS: JARU maker's mark in mold; rear on bottom of left foot.
MEASUREMENTS: 4.5" x 4.5" x 21"
Excellent, pre-owned condition. There is small black mark on the upper right arm. No breaks, cracks, chips, scratches or other damage found. No repairs found.
