This Andy Warhol rare vintage 1970 first edition iconic Pasadena Art Museum landmark exhibition lithograph print collector's Pop Art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The softcover exhibition book is published by The New York Graphic Society, printed in England in 1970 by The Curwen Press in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of the exhibition. Authored by John Coplans, with contributing text by Calvin Tomkins, Jonas Mekas, and Jane Salzfass, book design by John Coplans.
Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, artworks, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. Glorifying the common as the beautiful. His technique utilizing a silkscreen method combined with hand finishing in a signature palette of vibrant color hues make the work stand on its own and loved by millions.
In 1970, The Pasadena Art Museum organized the first American major retrospective exhibition of Andy Warhol artworks to travel internationally. The British born artist and curator John Coplans organized this landmark exhibition. It concentrated on serial aspects of Warhol's art, including the iconic Campbell's Soup Cans and Brillo Boxes. Specifically for the Pasadena exhibition one hundred Brillo boxes were created of plywood before being screen printed with each design for the 1970 exhibition that inaugurated the newly built Pasadena Art Museum, which later became The Norton Simon Museum.
Curwen Press the printer of this book was founded in 1863 to publish sheet music. In 1908 it began to print highly regarded limited edition books and fine art posters. Curwen Press did much to advance the use of color lithography printing, and at the vanguard of the design revolution that saw expression in British printing in the early 20th Century.
The rare out of print collector's iconic Pop Art exhibition book measures 9" W X 11" H X 1/2" D, with 160 pages. It features 136 illustrations including 18 full color lithographs.
