African-inspired mask meets Darth Vader in this sculpture from the 1980s! We love the pop culture, modern Star Wars take on a traditional wooden mask. This is a sculpture of carved and stained wood with wool fibers. Base is carved out of a single piece of wood. Dowel with wool and fittings are carved separately and attached to the base. Carved markings on reverse: “СВІТОВИЙ /1985 / ЕВГЕН” which translates to “SVІTOVIJ / 1985 / EVGEN”. This is likely by a Ukrainian artist Evgen Svitovij or Svitoviy although we don’t know anything about the artist. High quality work and skilled carving — very striking! Nice size to display on a wall in a grouping with other artwork. Great pop culture conversation piece.
