A stunning, fine quality, fruitwood chest of drawers, featuring superior craftsmanship, superb detailing and elegant decorative accents, this vintage French chest of drawers (commode - server - sideboard) designed in an elegant French Country style, exceptionally executed in Louis XV taste, signed JP Ehalt.
Meticulously hand-crafted in France in the mid 20th century, having a shaped top with exquisite detailed cherry wood parquetry, framed by delicate cross-banded inlay border and stepped molded edge, over case fitted with three drawers, each exquisitely hand-crafted with dovetail joinery, sculpted gilt bronze fittings, the drawer smoothly opening to reveal rich mahogany finished interior. Superb detailing throughout including paneled drawer fronts with hand carved fiolate and scroll motif, flanked by corners that are rounded with a carved panel over a protruding shaped knee. Shaped apron with scrolled acanthus and shell carving, gracefully rising on short cabriole legs, ending in scrolled French whorl feet. Signed/stamped "JP-EHALT" interior.
Circa 1960
The lovely patina of the hand waxed finish gives the aged wood an enchanting luster and enhances the overall desirability of this piece. During the 18th century, the French often considered the commode to be the prime piece of furniture in the chateau. It was often placed as a showpiece in the main room of the chateau.
JP Ehalt is a well renowned and reputable luxury furniture producer in the northeastern region of France. The Ehalt fine furniture company was founded in 1924 in Strasbourg, France, located on the German border, by Charles Ehalt, a fine carver and cabinetmaker specializing in traditional designs of Alsace and Lorraine. In 1948 his son Jean-Pierre Ehalt stepped in to manage the business and developed wonderful designs in antique reproduction furniture specializing in ranges of styles such as Regency with the "Liverpool", "Glasgow" series, the Chippendale, Queen Anne or Georgian with the "London" series, the regal and stately Neoclassical Louis XVI series including the spectacular "Elysée" extending dining room table that we currently have available. And the 18th century Louis XV series, with graceful, simple, clean lines, refined rustic character, country elegance and sophisticated Rocaille elements, all tailor made, while retaining the reputation of excellent, top-notch craftsmanship that is second to none. This large chest is a fine example of Jean-Pierre's work. An unusual, rare and outstanding masterpiece.
Magnificent presence, sure to makes a statement in a hallway, dining room, bedroom or entry! less
