This is a matted Art Deco design plate from an French unbound album of Chinese lacquer work called “les Laques … Read more This is a matted Art Deco design plate from an French unbound album of Chinese lacquer work called “les Laques du Coromandel". This is an example of the decorative Chinese craft of using lacquer on wood in successive layers, first working deep incisions and hollowed out details and then finely applying paint. The process was discovered by European artists and enjoyed success in France between 1910-1930. This lithograph features vignettes of floral arrangements with flowering blossoms and decorative baskets/vessels. The details of the image are intricate, elaborate and most dramatic. Rich deep color tones are set against the very dark background. Take a moment to zoom in on the details. Note that the image is in horizontal format. These vignettes were used in Coromandel screen designs which in turn are highly desirable. The lithograph dates to 1925 and captures the essence of the beautiful techniques of lacquer work designing. Rare and unusual work in horizontal format, image measures 8.5 x 13.25 inches. Comes matted in a neutral tone 16 x 20 inch mat ready for a standard size frame.
