This is a strikingly example of a mid 19thC Hen-in-Nest molded in extremely fine detail, in the highly collectible, and much desired, bisque (unglazed) form. The comb, beak, eyes and crown are also devoid of bright over-glaze.
The hand-painted hen sits on nest under four eggs with head cocked to the left. It's red comb tops a black crown. The feathers are finely-sculpted and lead to a scalloped split-tail back. The light brown base features a braided rim and a basket-weave bottom. It carries no mark, as in typical of Staffordshire during this period. A close look at the underside and interior of the bowl shows attributes that confirm age and origin.
