He was a self-taught artist, yet achieved success in his lifetime, his work even being accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy, the ultimate mark of recognition for serious artists since the late 18th century. A charming synopsis of his life was written and published upon his death in 1879, and published in the Daily Gazette of Middlesbrough, Yorks., a copy of which I am happy to share.
