A wonderfully quirky 19th century Staffordshire lion attributed to Obadiah Sherratt – one of the region’s most distinctive potters. Titled “The Roran Lion” (a charming misspelling of “Roman” that only adds to its folk-art appeal), this white glazed figure stands on a signature Sherratt raised base. With expressive features and one paw placed assertively on a ball, this lion echoes the famous Medici Lion but is unmistakably Staffordshire in spirit. The title is a delightfully folkish detail – a hallmark of the period’s more provincial makers – and makes this a conversation piece for any collection.
