A rare pair of older Chinese Famille Noire Nyonya ceramic planters. These magnificent hand painted planters have a wrap around hand painted scene in vibrant & colourful raised enamel work. Such planters were from China, made for the Straits Chinese market, the Nyonya who settled in the Malay Archipelago area as early as the 15th. Century.
A pair of colourful and exotic Phoenix birds dominate amongst chrysanthemums and peonies on one side with long tails that wrap around the back of the body of the planter to the back with two small white birds fluttering around. The trees are traditional Chinese style, as are the rocks and landscape.
Five expressionable orange goldfish swim amongst the green pond weed & lily pads inside the planters. The jardinières sit upon solid rosewood stands, the legs of elegant cabriole form, shaped as abstract dragons. The circular stretcher forms a stable platform. Slightly concave unmarked bases.
First Quarter 20th. Century. Possibly Late Qing.
A superb pair of Nyonya planters obtained from a high end estate collection here in Florida - an individual widely travelled in the Orient.
Suitable for hallways, lobbies, foyers, formal spaces and living areas - or wherever you like.
