After graduating from Monmouth College, Elizabeth Gowdy Baker furthered her studies at New York's Cooper Union and at the Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts, later attending Cowles Art School in Boston where she studied under William Merritt Chase and H. Siddons Mowbray. She subsequently traveled extensively in Europe, studying and painting in Rome, Florence and Paris. She was the founder and first president of the Society of Aquarellists and a member of numerous art associations including the National Association of Watercolor Artists and the National Arts Club. She exhibited widely and with success including at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts (the National Art Club, the Art Institute of Chicago and New York's Ainslee Galleries among others. The artist is listed in all relevant reference works including Benezit and Who Was Who in American Art and her work is held in the permanent collections of museums nationwide.
