Gateleg tables were introduced in America in the 17th century. They were a practical solution for small houses because they could be folded up to save space. Comprised of a main table section that has an attached leaf, or flap, on each side, the gateleg table is supported by both stationary legs and hinged gate legs, which are connected by stretchers. When a leaf is raised, the gateleg can be swung out to support the upright leaf. When not in use, the tables could be folded and moved easily to open up space in a room.
The lovely gateleg table you see in the photos has a gorgeous oval tabletop (when its leaves are extended) which makes for a great breakfast table in a small dining space or eat-in-kitchen. When compact, it will serve beautifully as a console, foyer or sofa table. We believe the tabletop is handcrafted from poplar hardwood, while the legs and base are maple wood. The tabletop’s gorgeous hue and patina is the result of a mid-tone walnut stain and wax finish that has aged naturally over time. We believe the table was made sometime between 1900 to 1920. The table’s base consists of eight ring turned baluster and spool turned legs with cross stretchers; two of the legs swing out to support the dropped leaves. This beauty measures 45” x 34”x 29¼” W/D/H with leaves extended; 34” x 15”x 29¼” W/D/H with leaves folded down; approximate weight 40 lbs. If you plan to use it as a breakfast table, for me the table knee clearance is 7” (I’m petite 5’ 2”) so if you are taller, this distance will be less. It is in overall excellent structural condition. There is a cosmetic blemish located on the tabletop’s center edge (see photos 7 & 9). Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age so there are age-appropriate splits to several of the bobbin-style feet (see photo 10). There is one stretcher and leg that has sustained wear (see photos 4 & 8) that does not impact its structural integrity. With all of this said, these “bumps and bruises of life” are part of the character and charm you would expect from a piece like this, which does not affect its overall utility or beauty. We suspect it is American made rather than English; no makers mark.
The beauty of a piece of vintage of furniture changes and deepens over time. Daily use produces wear with character, offering an intangible sense of connectedness to the past. With its timeless appeal, this gateleg table is a model of versatility that will look fabulous in any setting, from historic to mid-century. This charming table’s history contains many chapters yet to be written, by you!
