This Jean Michel Basquiat very rare vintage 1986 collector's offset lithograph print custom framed large iconic Denmark exhibition poster " Self Portrait as a Heel ( Part Two ) " 1983, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The landmark exhibition poster print is published by The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humelbaek Denmark. printed in 1986 in Denmark by Grafdan Offset, in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of the exhibition " Portraet af en Samler : Stephane Janssen " ( Portrait of a Collector : Stephane Janssen ). It features an iconic artwork image originally created by Basquiat in 1983 titled " SelfPortrait as a Heel ( Part Two ) ".
This is a rare opportunity for true Basquiat fans and collectors, as this highly coveted image exhibition poster print is long out of print and very scarce to find. The poster was created during Basquiat's short lifetime, and is considered to be one of the most rare holy grails of Basquiat ephemera.
Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the Street Graffiti artist nick named " Samo " in the late 1970's on New York City's Lower East Side. By the early 1980's with the help of his friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat began to make his emotionally charged aesthetically arresting Neo Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum of Art held a major retrospective exhibition of the life works of this great American Contemporary artist and master of social commentary.
His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vs outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, and married text and image with Abstraction and Figuration. Basquiat's works had strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles.
Basquiat's " Self Portrait as a Heel ( Part Two ) " was painted during an extended stay in Los Angeles in 1982 - 1983, while residing in the Venice3 home of renowned art dealer Larry Gagosian, who world later organize the artist's first west coast exhibition. The artwork is understood by experts to be autobiographical about his experience in Los Angeles. During this prolific phase of his career, he incorporated the word " Heel " into three of his works, alluding to Punk and delinquent subculture, indicating the villain, by calling himself the heel, he may be portraying himself as the anti-hero.
The monumental self portrait translates the artist's self-alienation into visual terms, as he always looked back at himself - as well as us - from the place of the other. " Self Portrait as a Heel " unapologetically confronts the viewer with the artist's profound understanding of selfhood at the pinnacle of his brief but explosive career.
" Self Portrait as a Heel ( Part two ) " previously belonged to Belgian art collector Stephane Janssen, who was an early supporter of Basquiat's and had acquired it from Gagosian in 1985. The original painting hadn't been seen in public since its last appearance at auction in 1999. The elusive self portrait, unseen for over two decades, took center stage at Sotheby's New York in 2023 selling for 42 million, making it among the most valuable of Basquiat's work ever sold.
Stephane Janssen ( 1936 - 2020 ) the Belgian Paris born gallery owner and influential collector was an earlier champion of Jean Michel Basquiat. Stephane's vast collection was defined not only by its considerable size, including over 3000 works, but by his unaffected approach to collecting. He gave less regard to how famous the artist was, how prestigious the gallery, or how investment worthy the piece. He was driven solely by how much he loved the artwork, and his emotional connection to it. Stephane was one of the few collectors who possessed a heightened sense of the person behind the work. In 1986, The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark honored Stephane with an exhibition of works from his outstanding collection. This landmark exhibition poster was published for that important exhibition.
