This etching by Cavalieri Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is titled “Veduta interna della Basilica di S. Pietro in Vaticano alla Tribuna” (Interior View of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican near the Tribune.) Some of his work was imaginary, but Piranesi’s passion was to glorify the architecture of Ancient Rome. He was born to a stone mason and trained as an architect. After a slow start, he experienced success. This engraving is framed with glass.
This etching is in very good original condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are minor losses to the gilding on the frame.
