A striking set of six dining chairs from the 1970s, attributed to Pierre Cardin for Maison Jansen. These Minimalist chairs feature chrome-plated metal frames with high backs and subtly curved legs. This set includes four chairs upholstered in smooth white leather and two in striated purple velvet. The stackable, angular silhouettes epitomize the avant-garde style of Pierre Cardin and beautiful craftsmanship of Maison Jansen. Unmarked. Sourced in France, 1970s.
Pierre Cardin, renowned for his innovative fashion designs since the 1950s, also made significant strides in furniture design. His desks, chairs, cabinets, and tables reflect the same simplicity, geometric shapes, and elegance as his clothing. Born near Venice, Italy, and raised in central France, Cardin developed an early passion for the fashion industry. After World War II, he moved to Paris, where he studied architecture and worked for several couture houses, including a stint with Christian Dior in 1946. Cardin launched his own fashion house in 1950 and expanded into furniture design in the 1970s.
In 1975, he opened a custom furniture shop in Paris. By 1977, he had licensed his name for furniture, lighting, and rugs that brought his fashion sense to the mass market. Although he didn't design the pieces himself, Cardin believed that furniture was a natural extension of his brand, famously stating, “Make sleeves to dresses or feet to a table, it’s the same thing.”
Condition: Good overall vintage condition. Light scuffs along the chrome-plated metal frames that align with age and use. The white leather is damaged in areas with peeling and discoloration, as shown in photos. Spots and marks along the purple velvet. Reupholstery recommended; we have elected to sell these chairs in their current state so the end user can select fabric. Upholstery services are available through our showroom (Fabric + Upholstery Labor is not included in the purchase price).
