Morris Louis Bernstein ( 1912 - 1962 ) the Abstract Expressionist Modernist painter of Russian Jewish descent became one of the earliest exponents and leading figures in the 1950's of " Color Field " paintings, along with contemporaries Kenneth Noland and Helen Frankenthaler. He was one of the founding members of the Washington D.C> are painters known today as " The Washington Color School ".
In his short yet prolific career, Louis continually experimented with method and medium, manipulating large canvases in creative ways to control the flow and stain of his paints. His mature style, characterized by layered veils and rivulets of poured paint on untreated canvases, make his paintings some of the most iconic works of Mid Century Modern Color Field Painting. Artworks by Louis are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
" Morris Louis Now : An American Master Revisited " was the first major showing of the artist's work since the 1980's. The exhibition presented major paintings from the early 1950's until his death in late 1962, the years he developed his most innovative techniques of his signature style. The exhibit was organized by The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, in close collaboration with the artist's widow, Marcella Louis Brenner, and independent art scholar Diane Upright.
This special volume that accompanied the exhibition, both of which explore Louis' masterful career that contributed to a critical turning point in American Modern Art, and his influence on Contemporary practice and subsequent generations of painters.
