This " Cape Cod Modern : Midcentury Architecture and Community on The Outer Cape " rare first edition hardcover Modernism design book is a very special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with matte eggshell finish laminated cover boards is published by Metropolis Books / Art Book / D.A.P. New York. Printed in 2014, authored by Peter McMahon and Christine Cipriani, foreword by Kenneth Frampton, book design Rita Jules.
In the summer of 1937, Walter Gropius, founder of The Bauhaus and professor at Boston's Harvard School of Design, rented a house on Cape Cod. There he hosted a reunion of Bauhaus masters recently emigrated from Europe. There they planned their futures together and they never lost their connection to the Cape Cod coast. Thus began a chapter in the history of Modern Architecture that had never been told until this special book.
The flow of talent onto The Outer Cape created a hotbed of intellectual currents as Avant-Garde homes began to appear in the woods, dunes and beaches. By the 1970's there were about 100 significant Modern homes of interest here. Initially, these designers built for themselves, their families and friends. The result is a body of work unlike any other, a Regional Modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and Postwar experimentation.
Rigorously researched and meticulously documented, this unique volume narrates an extraordinary era of architectural experiments in spatial organization and materials on The Outer Cape. These houses are not only examples of an alternate legacy of the masters of Modern Architecture. They are diagrams of a very particular worldview and recommendations for a specific way of living - progressive and enlightened with art at its center.
