Bow rockers were introduced in the 17th century and as their name implies, they are rocking horses with four limbs extending from a bow-shaped base, a base that is similar to that of a bow and arrow. The bow-shaped base of the horse rocker allows it to rock back and forth, however, this floor-sized rocker horse is truly more of a decorative accent. This handsome fellow has been artfully hand carved with from an assortment of hardwoods. The ears and muzzle are with well-proportioned with nicely carved eyes that are almond-shaped. The curling mane wraps slightly around the neck to the sides. The colorful torso sits on nicely shaped legs and beneath, the bow rocker displays a playful carved scroll design. The sculpted saddle is adorned with eastern-influenced carved crescent shaped scales, floral and curled motifs and rounded saber shaped sheaths. Colors are muted hues of amber, saffron, teal, bottle green and dappled tan with brown undertones; espresso brown mane and tail. Dimensions are as follows:
Height: from horse ear tips to bow rocker bottom: 28”
Width: (measured from side of bow rocker bottom left to right) 25½”
Depth: (measured from bow rocker backside bottom left to right) 9”
Weight 16 lbs.
In excellent structural condition with age-appropriate wear. It appears the horse was hand carved in segments and then assembled (head, legs, tail, bow rocker). Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age so you will find there was an age-appropriate tension crack on the torso’s center left and right side which was filled with wood glue to prevent further movement (see photos 3, 7, 8). There are also hairline cracks at the joints where the varying pieces were assembled. None of this affects its beauty or structural integrity. The photos provided accurately depict the overall condition that should be considered as part of the description. We believe this handsome fellow was handcrafted in Indonesia sometime in the mid 20th-century; maker unknown.
Uniquely charming and full of character, it will be an ideal accent for making a statement in a child’s room or nursery, outfitting a fireplace hearth or serving as a whimsical design element in a family room, library or alcove.
