Add a classic touch to your favorite door with this fine pair of American mirrored aka mercury glass door knobs with brass nickel finish shanks and round rosettes from the mid 19th century. Although known as "mercury" knobs they actually do not contain mercury, instead they are lined with silver nitrate. At the time, these glass knobs were very popular and adorned most of the neo-classical style mansions in the south and east coast. Amazingly, they are still very stylish to this day.
This set is complete and all original, with the exception of the steel pin. The spindle was permanently set into one knob while the other knob securely attaches to the spindle by means of a steel pin as shown. Please note this set can only fit doors 1.5" thick. The silver nitrate interior finish is in excellent condition and remarkably has no flaking. The exterior glass has very light scratches on one knob, otherwise they are free of nicks and are in excellent antique condition with normal wear from age and use. The set is very characteristic of quality craftsmanship and ingenuity during the mid 19th century and would make for a fine addition to any classic neo-classical or traditional home. Ready for installation and built to last many more years.
