A fine late 18th century Louis XVI period bureau à cylindre, or roll top desk, made of solid walnut with marquetry veneers of walnut, mahogany and cherry. In two parts, the cabinet above has mahogany tambour doors, a large drawer and marble top. The surface of the cylinder has a marquetry inlay design and retains a nice shine. The roll top opens to reveal three small drawers and red leather (not original, but old) writing surface that pulls forward. Cast brass hardware with working locks and three keys. Square tapered legs with both right legs repaired. Beautiful choice of wood with skilled marquetry detail. Exceptional quality and craftsmanship, in very good condition for the age.
Overall dimensions: 58.5"H x 33"W x 20"D
Height to top of writing surface: 28.5"
Total depth when desktop is extended: 27.5" less
