This lovely 78-piece set of elegant Johnson Brothers china will make for elegant dinners. A creamy white field is adorned with an edge band of gold featuring the ever on-trend black Greek Key decoration and a rim of stylized floral garlands. Identified by Replacements as code "JB189".
The pieces bear 2 maker's marks en verso; a green text-only mark, "Johnson Brothers England" and the more common Johnson Bros., England topped by an imperial crown both in green. Our research suggests a late 1800s - early 1900s date for fabrication, probably between 1891 when the McKinley Act required a country of origin label for any American imports and 1921 when that action was amended to include the words "Made in" before the country name. These pieces meet the 1891 law but not the 1921 modification.
The set consists of:
* 22 salad/dessert plates, 7" Dia., no chips, no stains, 1 stable crack, 1 minor glaze flaw;
* 11 luncheon plates, 8" Dia., no chips, 1 minor stain;
* 12 bread & butter plates, 6.25" Dia., no chips, 1 minor glaze flaw;
* 4 dinner plates, 9.2" Dia., 1 with chip on back, 1 with stable cracks, no stains;.
* 10 shallow bowls, commonly known as cream soup bowls, 9.5"Dia.; no chips, no stains;
* 6 deep bowls, 7.5" Dia., no chips, no cracks, 1 minor stain;
* 6 oval berry / ice cream bowls, 5.75"W x 4.25"D, no chips, no cracks, 1 minor stain;
* 4 crescent / bone dishes, 6.25"W x 3.5"D, no chips, no cracks, no stains;
* 1 Two-handled, shallow bowl, 7.6"W x 7.3"D, no chips, no cracks, minor discoloration;
* 2 oval serving bowls, 9.2"W x 6.75"D & 8.25"W x 6.2"D, no chips, no cracks, no stains.
