This " Clyfford Still " rare vintage 1979 first edition collector's Metropolitan Museum of Art iconic exhibition Modernist hardcover art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with cloth bound cover boards, embossed cover & spine titles, and dust jacket is published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, distributed by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers, offset lithograph printed in The United States in 1979 by Lebanon Valley Offset Company, Annville Pennsylvania on the occasion of the museum exhibition, edited by John P. O'Neill.
Clyfford Still ( 1904 - 1980 ) was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionists who developed a new powerful approach to painting immediately following WWII. His contemporaries included Franz Kline, Willem De Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Described by many as the most anti - traditional of the Abstract Expressionists. The work is credited for laying the groundwork for the movement.
This volume which records the 1979 - 1980 iconic exhibition of seventy five Still Paintings, dating from 1942 to 1978, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest exhibition of his work ever held - is the most comprehensive book on Still's work and thus an important document of 20th Century Modern Art.
Each of the 75 paintings in the exhibition is beautifully reproduced here as a full page or fold out color plate and is fully documented. many other major works by Still are illustrated in black & white. Notes by the artist, selected letters from his files, and a biographical outline are accompanied by documentary photographs.
The book contains a preface by Philippe De Montebello, director of The Metropolitan Museum, and an enlightening introduction by the eminent art critic Katharine Kuh. John P. O'Neill, editor of this volume, general manager of publications and editor in chief at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The rare out of print large format Collector's exhibition Modern Art book measures 11 1/2" W X 10 3/4" H X 1" D, with 222 pages. It is printed on premium paper stock, featuring 165 illustrations, including 89 in full color with several centerfold fold out images.
