Incredibly whimsical set of ceramic dragon mugs and pitcher attributed to sculptor Marcus Villagrán from the 1970/1980s.
The pitcher stands … more Incredibly whimsical set of ceramic dragon mugs and pitcher attributed to sculptor Marcus Villagrán from the 1970/1980s.
The pitcher stands 15 1/4" tall and measures 10" x 7". The three mugs are each roughly 6" tall and are 4 3/4" x 3 1/2".
In the 1960s, Villagran worked at North Hoover Street studios, where he came into contact with recognized clay and ceramic sculptors such as John Mason, Peter Voulkos and Mike Frimkess. For many years he earned a living as a production potter, but his life’s work has been bold sculpture. He holds degrees from Chouinard Art Institute and Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
He has exhibited widely and has received awards at juried shows, including first prize for sculpture at the 2006 Contemporary Clay ‘06 show in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Since settling in this area, he has exhibited at Cooperstown’s Smithy Center for the Arts, Green County Council of the Arts, Elizabeth Nields Clay Workshop, Community Arts Network of Oneonta and others. He has his own gallery, Dunderberg Gallery, in Gilbertsville New York. less
