This fabulous type of sewing basket was all the rage in the mid-20th-century! This beauty, however, is uniquely tall due to the three slender legs that give it a serious boost of height! The legs do unscrew, and when purchased, we will remove the legs and wrap each separately placing them next to the basket in a generously sized cushioned box to ensure a better shipping experience. The basket itself is also, nicely-sized and features a four-compartment tray on the interior. Made in Japan exclusively for Singer, the sturdy round wooden frame’s exterior is rattan rope handwoven in an over and under basket weave pattern interspersed with diagonal cane splints all around in soothing hues of mocha, blush, ecru and white. The exterior top of the lid is a beautifully padded needlepoint-style floral and foliate tapestry done in a melody of garden hues. Swivel wooden loop handle is wrapped in rattan twine and conveniently folds down in front or in the back. The bottom of the basket is covered in a wood print paper with a stamp that states “Made in Japan” and a style number. Three walnut stained slender legs, that again do unscrew, should you decide you like the basket without the legs. The interior compartment is fully lined in satin in a soft pale ivory hue. The top’s interior underside has plush pearl-accented tufted cushioning for pins and needles. Two hinges on the back allow the top to be fully opened with slender braided ropes on each side keeping it open for convenience. There is a removable plastic tray with four compartments, three small and one large, which will hold sewing or crafting supplies. On the exterior front, there is a looped fastener to secure the top to the basket. It measures 15½” high with the legs on and 8½” high without the legs; when handle is extended up for carrying t add 7” to the overall height; exterior width/depth 12” x 12”; interior compartment 7” x 10” x 10“ H/W/D; weight 2 lbs. 13 oz. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. This age-related wear refers to a previous repair to the underside which reinforced one leg bracket (see photo 10) which does not affect its beauty or utility. While designed to store sewing accoutrements, it’s perfectly suited for storing craft or embroidery items. A fabulous piece for a collector of vintage sewing baskets or the perfect gift for someone who is.
