Late 19th century, … more A fine quality Parisian Renaissance Revival style credence cupboard by Eugene Dienst & Fils (active circa 1870-1900)
Late 19th century, France, St. Faubourg Saint-Antoine region of Paris, at the time a legendary district renowned for the shops of some of the finest ébénistes (cabinetmakers) in all the world.
The credence cupboard (dining buffet - sideboard - credenza, used for the storing and displaying of plates and for serving at banquets), circa 1880, showcases excellent craftsmanship, hand-crafted solid oak construction and profuse hand carved ornamentation, exceptionally executed in medieval inspired Renaissance Revival taste, one-piece design, having a stepped cornice over dual cabinet doors, each with central portrait plaque among foliated scrollwork arabesques in low and high relief adding distinct three-dimensional qualities, warmth and rich depth. The doors opening to a shelved interior storage compartment, above a single dovetailed drawer with relief shell-form handle. Turned drop-finials flank ornate turned bluster-form column supports adorned in intricate acanthus carvings, rising on a conforming hexagonal platform base where the flowing scrolling foliate carvings continue over stepped molding, having large lower open display shelf against paneled backplate, further rising on sculpted tapering feet. The backside of the case giving a glimpse into the quality with visible hand-cut dovetail joinery.

- Brief History About Maker:
Maison Dienst began their workshop in Paris in 1836. Located at 58 rue du faubourg St Antoine from 1836, at 38, 29 then 86 until 1871. His son, Eugène Dienst took over his father’s company in 1871, retaining the same name and address, crafting complete fine furniture, he was distinguished for his ability to execute across various styles, including 18th century Louis XV, Louis XVI, transitional, Victorian Gothic, middle ages Italian Renaissance, and contemporary period Art Nouveau.
Eugène Dienst earned numerous achievements and recognition throughout his career, most notably participating in the important Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889, where Dienst was awarded the top honor of a gold medal. That jury honored Eugène Dienst and reported that they regretted that Mr. Dienst only entered in the cabinetmaking category, as he was just as talented cabinetmaker as he was a sculptor.

Brief History / Relevant F. le Gallais Information:
Founded by 21 year old cabinet maker Richard Le Gallais in 1825 on the Jersey Channel Island, just off the coast of France, and between England, it started as a fine furniture workshop, quickly growing to a luxury home furnishing store where it prospered, and a large volume of trade began to exported, in part because of the islands link to the Cod fishing trade, as well as being rewarded with a Royal Warrant during the reign of Queen Victoria.
In 1880 F. le Gallais expanded with added departments, including a very high-end art, furniture and decorative arts storage warehouse in addition to their exportation port. As well as auctioneer department, on the 16th June 1884 the Royal Warrant was granted to him for his lifetime; this enabled him to advertise and use the Authority by renaming the Auction Rooms "The Royal Auction Rooms". Their stellar reputation has allowed them to continue growing throughout their 200 year history and flourish to this day.
