The high quality wood, graceful French bracket feet, and finely crafted dovetails all point to this chest being from a large coastal city. Given the poplar and white pine secondary woods, this piece is American, likely from the northeast. The family we purchased this piece from ran an antique shop in New York City for many years, so New York is likely where it was made. The design elements like the French bracket feet and string inlay on the drawers are Neoclassical features from the late 1700s and early 1800s. Given the construction details like the nail types used, this chest was made in the early 1800s.
