Cram's Deluxe Globe with an Automatic Daily Sun Ray Indicator supported by a metal base with lithographed seasons, zodiacs, months, and instructions (ca. 1950, USA).
This model was conceived in the 1930s to aid in the demonstration of the relationship of the elliptical orbit of the earth to the sun.
Setting the pointer on the season indicator (globe's base) displays the point at which the sun's rays hit the Earth while automatically displaying day and nighttime periods by using a ferule.
Globe itself is a 12" 'Beginner's Globe' composed of paper gores over board with landmasses displayed in bold yellow against dark turquoise bodies of water. Unusual model highlighting capital cities without identifying the countries to which they belong. Dated ca. 1950, given the presence of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The exact instructions for using the globe are as follows:
-Set globe with North pole pointed to the north.
-Turn pointer to the right desired date.
-Sun ray attachment shows the angle at which the direct and oblique rays strike the earth and they constantly come from the sun approximately 93K miles away.
-The position of the earth in relation to the rays of the sun is shown for every day in the year, and the reason for the changing seasons plainly demonstrated on the Globe, as per key on base.
-The Earth rotates on its axis from left to right 15 degrees each hour, and makes a complete rotation every 24 hours.
Heavy wear to the lithograph details on the base (a portion of the Taurus/May details were removed when an old label was peeled off in that section).
Otherwise, globe itself is in very good, vintage condition with light wear consistent with age/use.
