Born in Denver, Colorado, Vigil was raised on farms around Greeley, Colorado. On his mother's side, he was descended from Pueblo Indians and on his father's side from the Spanish. Vigil's work introduces the idea of modernism to native american art because, rather than purely naive, his images are abstract expressionist in tone. However, he also imbues his subjects with his own flowing style, frequently painting to music and allowing musical rhythms to guide his brushwork. See less
