Red Jasper is such a beautiful stone, especially when there are striations which break the monotony of the solid red color. This bottle was purchased from an English collector who was a seaman working in Asia at the end of the 1970's. That was the period when Premier Deng Xiaoping opened China for foreign trade and he encouraged craftsmen of all media to produce fine objects for sale to the foreign markets. This collector shopped all over China ports and throughout shops in Southeast Asia. I can say he had a great eye and he picked the best of the newly made snuff bottles made by experienced carvers.
The appearance of the red jasper bottle with the very subtle orange and grey lines can easily be transported to a canvas as an abstract painting. The flattened rectangular shape with sloping shoulders and sides tapering to a short raised oval foot. The top of the opening is slightly concave, a good sign to support the 1970's date. The stopper is made of a solid dark red agate on a white collar. The core is cork and it fits well in the opening. less
