This Andy Warhol very rare vintage 1985 iconic Pop Art lithograph print hand signed custom framed collector's large exhibition poster " Four Marilyns " 1962, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The Pop Art poster print is published by The Walker Art Center Minneapolis. Printed in 1985 in an unnumbered limited edition by the renowned Posters Originals, on the occasion of the " Selections from The Illeana and Michael Sonnabend Collection " exhibition. It features an iconic artwork image of actress Marilyn Monroe originally created by Warhol in 1962 titled " Four Marilyns ", copyright 1985 Andy Warhol, Poster Originals, limited No. 411.
This is a rare opportunity for true Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe and Pop Art fans and collectors as this coveted image hand signed exhibition poster print is long out of print and very scarce to find. It is hand signed by the artist in black marker in the lower right below image. Fewer than 100 of these posters were said to have been hand signed by Warhol at the Walker Art Center exhibit.
Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, art works, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. Glorifying the common as the beautiful. His technique utilizing a silkscreen method combined with hand finishing in a signature palette of vibrant color hues make the work stand on its own and loved by millions.
Warhol's " Four Marilyns " 1962, is from one of the artists most acclaimed portfolio series. Set against a background of vibrant blue, this Pop Art portrait is feminine, bold, and iconic. It embodies the masterful use of repetition fro which Warhol's work has come to be known. The bold coloration of the artwork recalls the saturated hues of the technicolor world in which Marilyn Monroe's career skyrocketed. The result is an inspiring exploration of the symbol of Marilyn Monroe as a Pop icon and cultural figure. Warhol's image of Marilyn Monroe has become one of the most admired and sought after of The 20th Century.
Illeana Sonnabend ( 1914 - 2007 ) was an early champion of American Pop Art and a pivotal figure in introducing Warhol's work to the European market. The lasting alliance with her first husband Leo Castelli famed gallery owner, made her one of The 20th Century's most influential dealers and collectors of Contemporary Art. In the 1960's with her 2nd husband Michael Sonnabend, they were devoted to showing the newest American Art in their Paris gallery for more than 40 years. In 1964 Warhol had his first solo exhibit in Europe at their gallery.
Her sense of daring earned the Sonnabends a reputation for consistently showing works other dealers might dismiss as difficult or impossible to sell. They were also famous for amassing an enormous art collection that remained mostly in storage. The Sonnabend Collection is about change, redefinition, experimentation and an ever-changing notion of what constitutes Avant-Garde.
In 1962 Evelyn and Leo Farland founded their infamous New York poster gallery and publishing business " Poster Originals Ltd. ". They created groundbreaking innovation and lasting effects with their pioneering approach to the poster industry from the early 1960's through the late 1980's. They worked with the leading American and European artists, international museums and top galleries collaborating to create some of the most iconic and important art posters of the Mid Century Modern, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionist, and Contemporary Art movements. This Warhol poster print is a beautiful example of Poster Originals finest work.
The rare out of print framed large format Pop Art exhibition poster measures 25 1/4" W X 38 1/8" H X 1 1/2" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern matte eggshell finish black wood museum box style frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in very good condition. The poster print is in very good vintage condition consistent with age, moderate signs of handling, and some moderate to medium visible surface wear.
