The retrospective exhibit highlighting Derain's prolific career and his remarkable contributions to Modern Art. It features an artwork image originally created by Derain in 1906 titled " Big Ben, Londres ".
Andre Derain ( 1880 - 1954 ) was a major Twentieth Century French artist, painter, and sculptor and co-founder of The Fauvism Art Movement with Henri Matisse. Derain and Matisse worked together in the summer of 1905 in the Mediterranean village of Collioure in France. Many of his paintings were landscapes, and would represent the height of his career as a Fauve artist. Art works by Derain are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Along with Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, and Henri Manguin, Derain is considered one of the principal figures in The Fauvism Art Movement. They all exhibited their highly innovative paintings at the controversial Salon D'Automne in 1905. The vivid unnatural colors led the art critic Louis Vauxcelles to name their work as " Les Fauves ", or " The Wild Beasts ", marking the start of The Fauvist Movement.
A view from across the banks of The River Thames, Derain's " Big Ben, Londres " painted when he was 26 years-old on a trip to London, portrays the iconic clock tower and The Houses of Parliament in an echo of Monet's famous series, but renders it in dazzling colors. The reflection of sunlight on the water shines in pinks and yellows, vivid against the blues and greens of both sky and water, in characteristic Fauvist style.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithograph plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
