Green Transferware Cream Plate
Tonquin Pattern
Edge Malkin & Co
Staffordshire, England 1883
Fantastic plate measuring a large 9.5" in diameter. Decorated in the Tonquin pattern, the plate features an asymmetrical composition that reflects the wonderful imagination of the Aesthetic Movement. Arching palms, lush vegetation, a Heron and many other tropical birds. An inset circular cartouche shows a tropical bird perched at sunrise. The intricate border on the lower half includes another Heron along with geometric shapes.
This piece was made by Edge Malkin & Co, as indicated by the engraving on the back, in the Staffordshire district of England. The kite shaped registration mark dates the plate to 1883. This plate is in excellent condition.
