Offered is a set of 2 1960s hand-carved Pepper shaped partitioned bowls in rare Philippine Kamagong wood. They are stamped "Philippine Craft" on the underside, and we do not know the name of the artisan, but they are very much in the style of Arthur Umanoff, Emil Milan, Jean Gillon, and Don Shoemaker - all mid 20th century wood design master artisans. Kamagong wood is extremely dense and hard and is famous for its dark espresso color and almost tiger striped contrast. It is sometimes referred to as Ironwood because of its density and hardness, or Philippine Macassar Ebony. It has been used in building, antique furniture, and even martial arts weapons thanks to its strength. Kamagong wood is now a protected species and can no longer be exported from the Philippines. These pieces are vintage and are grandfathered exempt. We hope the pictures do them justice as they are really quite striking. They are food safe and suitable for dry snacks, but are better suited for display or as catchalls for jewelry or precious belongings.
They measure 11.75" long, 8" wide, 1.625" tall
