- This is a beautiful set of 11 Dorothy Thorpe sterling band cocktail/wine glasses in the Allegro pattern. They have short … more This is a beautiful set of 11 Dorothy Thorpe sterling band cocktail/wine glasses in the Allegro pattern. They have short tapered stems and are in very good condition with no chips or cracks or wear on the silver. They hold 14 oz. and measure 4 3/4”H x 3 3/8”W. This modern snifter shape is but perfect for enjoying Brandy or Cognac and cocktails served with an ice cube or Wine. I have 11 of these available for purchase. Dorothy Thorpe was a Mid Century designer, she produced complete sets of table ensembles which were sold at high end department stores throughout the U.S. Thorpe is best known for her simple and classic style. She purchased “blanks” from manufacturers then decorated them with her personal designs. Some of these goblets still retain their Handmade by West Virginia Glass stickers, which helps date them. By the Mid Century she designed glassware with simple silver and platinum wide band rims. This clean modern design was recently revived on the show Mad Men. She never made Mercury Fade, only the wide and narrow bands of platinum with or without polka dots. She died in 1989. less
