Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artists is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Visionary genius Aime Maeght opened his infamous art gallery The Galerie Maeght in 1945 in Paris France. Coinciding with the end of World War II and the return of many exiled artists back to France. The greatest international artists of the time exhibited at the gallery including Francis Bacon, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Wasily Kandisnky, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Lindner, Henri Matisse, Paul Rebeyrolle, Walasse Ting, among many others.
In addition to being a gallerist and art dealer, Aime and his sone Adrien also founded Maeght Editeur which is recognized as one of the most important and influential publishers of lithographs, books, and fine art posters in the world, such as this exquisite exhibition poster print.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
This fine art lithograph poster is one of the most iconic and and desirable of the collaboration and long lasting partnership between the artist Matisse and Atelier Mourlot who together would create many important art posters. An example of this same poster is held in the permanent archive collection of many museums worldwide.
The rare out of print framed Paris exhibition poster print measures 19 3/4" W X 26 1/2" H X 1 1/8" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern matte eggshell finish black wood frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
