These are often … Read more Offered for your consideration, this solid maple New England rope bed in the vernacular American Sheraton style. These are often referred to as “canon ball” bedsteads, so named for their characteristic globular turnings. This bed also features “rolling pin” head and foot boards with inset panel of figured “curly” maple. This piece, although predating standard bed dimensions, can accommodate a full size mattress, although it would slightly extend over the rails. The head and footboard are also of equal size which would make the bed appropriate for for use as an “alcove” style placed lengthwise against a wall.

These antique beds are usually modified with wooden slats to form a platform in lieu of box springs. A modern futon mattress would work well with the non-standard dimensions and have a similar look to the hand-stuffed mattresses of the period. Another option would be a custom- made traditional mattress if exact dimensions are desired.
