The pasiking (knapbasket) is the indigenous basket-backpack found among the various ethno-linguistic groups of Northern Luzon in the Philippines. Pasiking designs have sacred allusions, although most are purely aesthetic. The mountainous northern part of the Philippine island of Luzon is referred to as the Cordillera Central. For centuries, basketry formed an essential part of all aspects of daily life in this area. The tribal groups of this area, called Igorots or Cordillerans, weave the pasiking, Bontoc sangi- a plaited backpack with a lid, featuring woven shoulder straps. Men use it for carrying a wide variety of items: rice, meat, beans, lunch, tools, and even on occasion, small children. Once created for everyday use, they now are appreciated for their exceptional beauty and craftsmanship.
