Antique French ‘Dame-Jeanne’, Demijohn, Carboy With Original Crate. Demijohn originally referred to any glass vessel with a large body and small neck, enclosed in wickerwork. The word comes from the French dame-jeanne, literally "Lady Jane", and was first used in France in the 17th century when demijohns were in wide use until the early 1900s. This authentic antique French demijohn or carboy has wood on wire handles, a lovely green glass, and is encased in the original wooden slat cladding with straw lining for protection. A red metal flange around the top reads Perrin & Fils Rognonas and amazingly the name and address of the customer is penned on a tag still attached to the handle (THIERY Raymond/ 24 Rud Schoepflin/ COLMAR)-- making this a rare find!
The Perrin family have cultivated their love of wine for several generations. The story begins in the early twentieth century with the Château de Beaucastel, jewel of Chateauneuf Pape. It was in 1909 that Pierre Tramier acquired the estate and today the 5th generation continues the family passion.
