A 1981 mixed media drawing titled "De Rerum Natura II" by the American artist Gerald G. Boyce (1925-1999). This highly detailed drawing has a wooden structure built in front of it, sectioning off the scenes below. Trees, rainbows, and abstract line work in graphite and colored pencil create a serene landscape. An intricate scene in the lower middle of the composition appears against a darker background with a man depicted holding a lantern, walking through a chaotic scene of figures, merchandise, and wreckage. Below that, an excerpt from the Roman poet Titus Lucretius Carus's work, De Rerum Natura, is written in Latin. The work is signed and dated to the left of the poem and displayed behind a white mat in a silver tone frame.
Born in Embarrass, Wisconsin, Boyce graduated with an undergraduate Science degree from Wisconsin State University in 1949 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. He later completed postgraduate degrees from Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Oxford University, and the Americano Guatemalteco Instituto in Guatemala. Boyce had an extensive teaching career, mostly as the chair of the Art Department, as well as an art history professor, at the University of Indianapolis. He also taught at Fresno State College, St. John's University, Indiana University, and Wabash College. He exhibited his own art extensively and his works have been included at exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Chicago Art Institute, the Los Angeles Art Museum, as well as many other museums, galleries, and universities.
