This house-shaped vessel is designed … more A 1998 studio pottery lidded urn vessel by the American artist Gerald G. Boyce (1925-1999). This house-shaped vessel is designed to look similar to the architecture in Tuscany, or potentially reference ancient Roman or Etruscan dwellings or huts. The lid of the vessel is shaped like a roof and made to look like it is tiled in terracotta barrel roof tiles. The body of the vessel uses a design to the exterior similar to bricks. A small rectangle on one side the the work bears the Latin words "Capvt Mortvvm," which roughly translates to "Dead Person." The underside of the work is signed and dated by the artist.

Born in Embarrass, Wisconsin, Boyce graduated with an undergraduate Science degree from Wisconsin State University in 1949 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. He later completed postgraduate degrees from Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Oxford University, and the Americano Guatemalteco Instituto in Guatemala. Boyce had an extensive teaching career, mostly as the chair of the Art Department, as well as an art history professor, at the University of Indianapolis. He also taught at Fresno State College, St. John's University, Indiana University, and Wabash College. He exhibited his own art extensively and his works have been included at exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Chicago Art Institute, the Los Angeles Art Museum, as well as many other museums, galleries, and universities. less
