A rare pendant light made around 1930. A mounting in nickel plated bronzer or solid brass holds a teardrop shaped shade in clear frosted hand-blown glass. The structure of the glass is not created the usual way by using acid. Instead the structure is hammered in the glass surface using a chisel. This technique is called “bouchardage” in French (and also "champlevage" or “verre éclaté” chipped glass). Bouchardage is an ancient technique used by stonemasons or sculptors to roughen parts of a surface. Their tool called “boucharde” is a hammer with a point. Masons also use it to emboss cement or concrete surfaces. In the 1920s Aristide Colotte (1885-1959) was the first glassmaker who used this technique on glass. In his studio in Nancy Colotte produced vases and sculptures. As far as we know is Daum the only glass manufactory which has used this highly specialized technique to make lamp shades.
The shade on this pendant is unsigned. Must have been made by Daum though. The mounting was produced by Célestin Jamain a Paris based producer and seller of art deco lighting during the interbellum.
The lantern has a total height of 24,6 inches (62,5 cm). The shade with a weight of 2 kilos is 25,7 cm (10,1") high and 21 cm (8,3") in diameter. It is in excellent condition. I re-nickeled and patinated the mount. The fixture is rewired with an American standard base socket.
