Mocha pottery, also known as mochaware, is a type of earthenware ceramic that was mass-produced in the 18th and 19th centuries in England and the United States:
The technique for making mochaware originated in Staffordshire, England in the 1780s. The name comes from the Red Sea port of Mocha, Yemen, which was known for exporting moss agate, also known as mocha stone.
Mochaware was produced in many countries, including England, France, and North America. In England, it was mainly produced in Staffordshire, but factories were also set up in Bristol, Hull, Leeds, Glasgow, Swansea, and Llanelly. In North America, East Liverpool was a center of mochaware production.
Mochaware was originally intended to be utilitarian, used in taverns and homes for everyday activities like drinking ale or cider.
Mochaware was popular with Americans and was imported into the country in the early 19th century.
