Daniel Pabst was a German-born furniture maker and designer in Philadelphia in the mid to late 19th century. Fine Quality Victorian Era circa 1860s-1880s Carved Walnut 3-Piece Dressing Bureau with Mirrored Pivoting Back, Original Marble Top, original hardware, original locks, and Dovetailed Drawers.
Upper frame includes center pivoting mirror over an open marble top. The middle section is the original marble top. The lower section includes three small deep drawers plus two large deep drawers all with original locks. There are four caster wheels on the bottom of the bureau for ease of moving to clean.
A kinship with the work of the Philadelphia architect Frank Furness is also evident in the top of the dressing bureau, the verticality and shingled "roof" of which somewhat resemble Furness's bank buildings of the 1870s. The stylized floral motif recalls the geometric plant forms of Christopher Dresser, a leading English ornamentist of the period who visited the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 and whose published designs were well known in this country. Daniel Pabst, a leading manufacturer of artistic furniture in Philadelphia, probably designed the dressing bureau.
Exceedingly well crafted, this piece is similar to other Pabst works featured in the world’s museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Provenance: This grand dressing bureau has been in my family and passed down thru the generations. My great aunt, Mary Evelyn deMedicis first owned the bureau. She was the State President of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (SC) for more than 25 years and involved in the women’s suffrage movement. She was listed in Who's Who Among American Women. My Grandfather and Grandmother, Herbert Hilton and Lucille Alma deMedicis, inherited the bureau from her. The deMedicis are descendants of Elias Medici, a Greco- Italian from Corsica and one of the first renowned settlers of Saint Augustine, FL. This same line descended from the infamous Medici of Florence, Italy. My Mother and Father are now ready for a new family to enjoy it as much as they have. less
