This large water vessel has a polished finish. It was acquired in Madurai from a private estate about forty years ago.
Of thick, beaten brass sheet, it sits on a flattened bottom, and has gently sloped sides until the shoulder is reached. It then rises to a small neck which widens to a mouth with a broad rim.
At some point it was gold plated and varnished.
Such vessels were used to store water – probably lustral holy water, perhaps from the Ganges.
From Madurai in Tamil Nadu, South India.
