This exquisitely crafted Regency-period mahogany horseshoe hunt table exemplifies the superior cabinetmaking of its era. Constructed from fine Regency-era mahogany, the table radiates a warm patina indicative of its distinguished age. Known also as a social table, this horseshoe-shaped table was meticulously designed for serving beverages during gatherings like parties or fox hunts. It features a half-moon-shaped top with a pivoting brass chariot, and a removable center leaf, all supported by four turned legs with brass cup castors. This design highlights its adaptability and multifunctionality. The center chariot could glide along its track to directly serve huntsmen or be removed to allow for staff service. Additionally, with the center leaf installed, it can function as a serving station, doubling as a buffet when placed against a wall.
The underneath holder for the brass server is not original. We added it to provide a convenient storage solution for the brass holder when not in use. Originally, the holder lacked a designated storage space, making it susceptible to being misplaced or damaged. Similarly, we crafted an oak storage holder case for the table leaf, ensuring it has a secure place for storage when not in use, thereby minimizing the risk of damage or loss.
The Regency era, rightly characterized as one of the most creatively vibrant periods in furniture and architectural design history, was largely driven by the West's rapid industrialization. Named after the Prince of Wales, who served as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820 and was a pivotal tastemaker, the Regency era formally spanned only nine years but is often extended to include the early decades of the 19th century, concluding with George IV’s death in 1830. Regency design drew considerable influence from contemporary archaeological discoveries and expeditions, blending Neoclassical elements through silhouettes and symbols rooted in antiquity, thus creating a harmonious fusion of the old and the new.
Today, such multifunctional design enhances the desirability of these skillfully crafted tables. This piece promises to be a splendid addition to any home, adding to fun indoor and outdoor use.
