This clay sculpture by Manuel Felguérez depicts a seated figure holding a wedge of watermelon. It is detailed with incised geometric patterns across the body and features perforated eyes and mouth, giving it a unique and expressive character.

About the artist: Manuel Felguérez (1928–2020) was a prominent Mexican abstract artist, known for his pivotal role in the post-war Generación de la Ruptura group. In making Constructivist and Cubist inspired sculptures and paintings, Felguérez confronted the dominant style of such Mexican muralists as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco, with work focused on aesthetic and formal experimentation rather than political or social agendas. As one of the first Mexican artists to explore the possibilities of geometric and gestural abstraction, he helped propel the country into the "post-muralist" era, aligning Mexican art with the international avant-garde. His wide-ranging body of work — including paintings, sculptures, assemblages, and public pieces — has been exhibited worldwide, showcasing his commitment to exploring the material and aesthetic values of art. less
