This 18th-century French Parisian armoire, crafted from walnut, exemplifies the elegant and refined design of the Louis XV period. The dome-shaped top, known as a “chapeau de gendarme” or policeman’s hat, is a defining feature of this style, adding a sense of height and grandeur to the piece.
The armoire’s double doors feature beautifully carved panels with soft, fluid curves, characteristic of the Rococo style, emphasizing asymmetry and natural forms. The intricate carvings at the top showcase floral and ribbon motifs, along with a central urn, symbolizing wealth and status, which is a hallmark of Parisian craftsmanship. The doors are adorned with original ornate iron hardware, including escutcheons and keyhole covers, highlighting the piece’s fine attention to detail.
The apron at the base is equally decorative, with scrollwork and floral carvings, resting on cabriole legs with scroll feet, contributing to the light, graceful appearance typical of Louis XV furniture. The warm walnut wood has a rich patina, showcasing the natural grain and adding depth to the overall design.
This type of armoire was not only a statement of luxury but also highly functional, used for storing clothing and linens. The craftsmanship and attention to detail make it a stunning example of Parisian woodworking from the 18th century.
