For Rosamond
This book owes its new, enlarged, and updated existence to the galvanic activity of my wife, Rosamond Bernier. Not only did she convince me that it was a good idea, but she persuaded our friend and neighbor Robert Morton, Director of Special Proj- ects at Harry N. Abrams, Inc., that it was the kind of book that Abrams could foster without disgrace. Within Abrams itself I had the delight of working above all with Eric Himmel, who turned out to know Paris better than I do, although he has never yet been there.
The multifarious documentation of the book owes a great deal not only to Rosamond Bernier but to our friend Claude Nabokoff, who undertook many a difficult task for us in Paris and proved herself a scholar, a diplomat, and something of a saint. We also think with gratitude and affection of our friends at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and the
Musée Carnavalet who took so much trouble on our behalf.
