Ashes and Snow Santa Monica Exhibition Catalogue. January, 2006 The complete collection of the of photographic artworks that comprise Gregory Colbert’s Ashes and Snow exhibition, on display from January 14 to May 14, 2006, in the Nomadic Museum at the Santa Monica Pier. The photographs, gathered on more than 40 expeditions since 1992, capture extraordinary moments of contact between man and animal.
The result of profound patience and vision, the photographs have not been digitally collaged or superimposed; they record what the artist himself saw through the lens. Printed and bound in Italy on deckle edge Biblos paper from Cartiera Magnani in Pescia, Italy (this is the paper on which Napoleon’s wedding announcement was printed); hand-sewn binding; cover from handmade Nepalese paper sealed with natural beeswax; tied with thread stained with hibiscus tealeaves and a Nepalese bead. Gregory Colbert has spent thirteen years filming and photographing elephants, whales, birds, and other animals in such places as India, Burma, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Namibia, Egypt, the island of Dominica, Tonga, and Antarctica.
Ashes and Snow, Colbert's lifelong project, is a collaboration with animals in their natural habitat as they interact with human beings. His images attempt to remove the boundaries between humans and other species—to re-awaken in us an understanding of our shared animal nature. The exhibition catalog collects more than 190 images from the U.S. debut of Ashes and Snow.
The books were printed and bound in Italy; the covers are created out of handmade paper from Nepal which is sealed with natural beeswax; interior pages are printed on handmade Italian paper; each book is hand sewn and tied with thread stained with hibiscus tea leaves. Biography Photographer/filmmaker Gregory Colbert is the creator of the exhibition Ashes and Snow, an immersive experience of nature that combines photographic artworks, films, and soundscapes, housed in a purpose-built traveling structure called the Nomadic Museum.
To date, Ashes and Snow has attracted over 10 million visitors, making it the most attended exhibition by any living artist in history. Colbert was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. He began his career in Paris in 1983 making documentary films on social issues. His first exhibition, Timewaves, opened to wide critical acclaim in 1992 at the Museum of Elysée in Switzerland. For the next ten years, Colbert went off the grid and did not publicly share his art or show any films. He began traveling the world to photograph and film wondrous interactions between animals and humans.
After ten years passed, Colbert returned to present Ashes and Snow at the Arsenale in Venice, Italy, in 2002. With his debut, Photo magazine declared, “A new master is born.” The New York Times, in an article by Alan Riding, stated, “The power of the images comes less from their formal beauty than from the way they envelop the viewer in their mood. . . .They are simply windows to a world in which silence and patience govern time.” Ashes and Snow has been described as "extraordinary" by the Economist, and "distinctive . . . monumental in every sense" by the Wall Street Journal. Stern magazine described the photographs as "fascinating," and Vanity Fair named Gregory Colbert in its "Best of the Best."
