This pair of torchieres is capable of hosting 300 watts of light, EACH, and the light that bounces off your ceiling will be diffused, for that most attractive, shadowless, light, and more than sufficient to light up your Scrabble board.
Especially if you don't have a ceiling light or sconces, this pair will save your day as well as providing a very stylish look.
The original finish on the bases was rusty, so I sanded them down (lightly) and sprayed them with "chrome" paint. Obviously the finish on the shafts and shades is far more muted, but if you're sensitive to the differences you can always hide the bases behind a chair or two, a couch, plants, whatever. There are spray paints that would better match the shafts and shades. It would be a Herculean job to take the bases off and I did check with my plater, and they shot me a price of "about" $300 each for re-plating. I don't think so!!
The lamps work perfectly (the wiring is original and in excellent condition). Each lamp has its original mogul 3-way socket. Along with the lamps will come reflective inserts for the shades and step-down inserts for the mogul sockets (pictured), which will allow you to use standard-based bulbs if you want. But who would want to give up the option of having 3-way bulbs? Not me!
Overall the condition of the shafts and shades is good, with a few scratches on the shafts; the shades are in very good condition with just a couple of scratches.
As these lamps are very heavy, packing them in "lamp boxes" will not insure the shades being delivered in their present condition, as the shippers will be hurling the boxes around and the shades will probably get bent as a result (I've seen it happen). So I've opted for pickup by Chairish transporters. less
